New research indicates that individuals who come off new weight-loss injections like Mounjaro or Wegovy may regain reduced body mass at a significantly accelerated pace than those who end conventional diet and exercise regimens.
Findings released in a prominent medical journal shows that while overweight individuals can lose a large proportion of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the mass returns at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.
"Users using such treatments should be cognizant of the danger of fast weight regain when the medication concludes," warns expert Dr. Susan Jebb.
That rate of recovery means a reversion to original mass within about a year and a half.
Analyzing Treatments
The research, which reviewed dozens of studies involving over 9,000 of participants, contrasted the outcomes of the injectable medications with older methods.
Scientists point out that individuals who lose weight through lifestyle changes alone typically see a slower weight regain—approximately 100 grams monthly—after stopping.
Understanding the Fast Regain
Doctors suggest the mechanism of the drugs is key to understanding the amplified regain.
GLP-1 drugs mimic a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which moderates appetite.
"Artificially providing the hormone concentrations several times higher than the body's typical production could lead to the body to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous GLP-1, and could lessen sensitivity to its actions," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics specialist.
"Discontinuation of this GLP-1 'fix' results in appetite is unsuppressed, making binge eating a significant risk."
A Chronic Disease?
The NHS suggest the jabs for individuals with obesity-related health risks, accompanied by recommended diet and exercise modifications.
Professionals say that, given the significant potential of relapse, the treatment should be considered life-long.
This perspective is reinforced by pharmaceutical companies, who state that the findings "emphasize the persistent character of obesity," similar to managing diseases like diabetes.
Patient Experiences
People who have discontinued the medication describe a sudden return of hunger.
"I experienced a trigger activating and I was suddenly extremely hungry," described a patient.
This difficulty is worsened if users have not adopted lasting lifestyle or habit changes during treatment.
Significant Interest
Survey data suggest that a significant number of adults in the UK have used these injections in the last 12 months, with desire continuing to grow.
- Adoption is higher among females than men.
- The middle-aged demographic shows the highest level of interest.
- A large proportion access the medications through private healthcare rather than the NHS.
Finally, clinicians emphasize that while the jabs are powerful agents for shedding pounds, they are not a magic cure and lasting health benefits hinges on combined behavioural changes.
